Pedro Sanchez
Mr. Pedro Sanchez graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Geology. Mr. Sanchez was educated on a broad variety of geological science disciplines by some of the nation's leading geology professors and professionals. He focused his interests on geophysical disciplines by using computer science programming on seismicity approaches and through an undergraduate research project. During his senior year at UIUC, he worked alongside Dr. Ross Maguire on a seismology machine learning project. He worked with Dr. Maguire to train a convolutional neural network (CNN) to differentiate natural earthquakes and man-made explosions. The CNN used seismograph jpegs in order to identify and classify a given event as an earthquake or a borehole explosion. He contributed to this project by using linux programming to change parameters and the architecture of the neural network to provide the most accurate percentages for the correct classification of these events from different recording stations across the United States. An official report for this project is currently in the works as of July 2023, but will be published soon under the title: “Transportability of Deep Learning Models for Classification of Local Distance Earthquakes and Explosions” by Maguire et. al. Mr. Sanchez is currently enrolled in Rice University’s Professional Master’s of Science Program in Space Studies. He hopes to do planetary science work or help with our nation’s missions to return humans to space and beyond as we venture to establish human bases and civilizations outside of planet Earth.
