Mr. Mohd Faiz Hassim graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Arizona (UofA) in 2014 with a double degree - BSc in Geosciences and BA in Economics. While at UofA, he undertook research projects with Dr. Barbara Carrapa in geochronology and low-temperature thermochronology research methods to understand the drainage evolution, timing of arc development, and erosion of the Indus-Yarlung Suture Zone in Tibet. He received David L. Moore’s Undergraduate Research Grant, Van de Verde’s Undergraduate Research Scholarship in Science, Galileo Circle Scholars Award, and presented his research work at various international conferences during his undergraduate years.
After graduating, he embarked on a rewarding career as petroleum geoscientist in the oil and gas industry for a span of eight years. During this time, he gained valuable experience and expertise in various aspects of the industry with his latest position as senior reservoir geologist in a multidisciplinary field development team – where he specializes in subsurface reservoir characterization and 3D reservoir modeling. He strives to optimize field development strategies and find great fulfillment in combining his knowledge of geoscience and economics to contribute to the sustainable and efficient development of natural resources.
Faiz is pursuing a Master of Science in Energy Geoscience at Rice University as a Fulbright grantee, with the area of specialization in Geology, Carbon Management, Energy Transition, and Sustainability. Addressing the anthropogenic CO2 emissions as well as ensuring access to reliable and abundant energy sources, are among the most pressing and interconnected challenges. He hopes to be able to shed some insights and provide a solution to this dual challenge - to supply the affordable and reliable energy the world needs while reducing environmental impacts.
