Ella Hohmann is a Professional Science Master’s student at Rice University studying Bioscience and Health Policy. She completed her undergraduate degree in Human Sciences at University College London in 2021. She plans on pursuing a career in Science Communication and aims to go beyond education and advocacy and move towards engaging the public with science.
Tell us a little about yourself
I grew up in Dubai and then moved to London to complete my undergraduate degree in Human Sciences at University College London where I graduated from in 2021. I am hoping to pursue a career in Science Communication and go beyond education and advocacy and move towards engaging the public with science.
Are you involved in any extracurriculars at Rice?
I am a part of the Rice Science Policy Networks leadership committee and I am the primary student leader of the Rice University National Professional Science Masters Association (RUNPSMA). I am also student president of the Rice Science Communication Club where my main role is to be a co-chair for the upcoming Science Communication Conference in Houston in 2023.
What is your favorite thing about Rice and/or Houston?
The Rice campus and all its beautiful trees.
What is your favorite thing about the PSM program?
The fact that we get so much choice in what classes we take. The program really is whatever you make it out to be.
What are you passionate about?
Female reproductive rights.
What would you like to do after graduation?
I would like to stay in Houston and work somewhere where I can combine my passion of writing and communicate with my love for science.
Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree? Why this particular program?
I wanted to keep learning. This program gave me the best of both worlds in that I could continue to have a strong focus on science, but also learn more about the business world.
Tell us about a favorite class and/or professor.
Immunology. I just love how everything works together and how nuanced and amazing the whole immune system is.
Have you had an internship? If so, where?
Center for Houston's Future working on the strategic initiatives in health care team. Houston Methodist Hospital working on the PR and media relations team. The Health Museum working as a health and science communications intern.
