Minji Gallegos graduated from Tec de Monterrey with a B.S. in Biotechnology Engineering in 2024. During her undergraduate years, she was involved in various projects focusing on sustainability across different industrial sectors, such as repurposing culture media waste as a biopesticide and co-authoring an article in the journal iBIO, examining the challenges of incorporating synthetic meat into the Mexican market, with a focus on current technologies, production costs, and environmental impact.
For her capstone project, Minji and her team designed an industrial plant to develop an astaxanthin-enriched aquafeed for both commercial and endangered arthropods to enhance their survivability using the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis as the main source of this antioxidant.
Such experiences showed her the importance of current environmental problems in different sectors that could be turned into opportunities, thus, after graduation, she was motivated to deepen her studies on remediation, risk management, and sustainable development in the Environmental Analysis Professional Science Master’s Program at Rice University. Minji is very eager about how this program will help her gain new advanced skills to develop even further her career path.
