Bret Halbe NP ’10, KLA-Tencor, California:
"I was working as a middle school science teacher in Phuket, when I decided to go back to school and change careers. My desire was to work in a field where high-tech innovations were currently happening, and nanotechnology especially interesting to me. Rice University had a great reputation in this field, and the Professional Science Masters program was appealing to me because it combined a solid science education with practical business training.
Looking back, I feel that both sides of the PSM education has helped me tremendously in my role at KLA-Tencor (soon to be LAM). I use both my education in nano-fabrication as well as the communication and presentation skills I learned at Rice on almost a daily basis. Apart from the education, I also found that the opportunities Rice provided for networking and interacting with industry professionals incredibly useful. Currently, I'm working at KLA-Tencor as an Applications Engineer. I works with equipment which is used in the semiconductor industry for inspecting Silicon wafers My job requires me to travel to semiconductor fabs around the world to interact with our customers and to help with their inspection needs. I would describe my job as part engineering and part marketing, which fits well with the science and business education I received at Rice."
